ARTISTIC STATEMENT

Gillian Popino is a New Jersey based dancer, choreographer, and teacher from Metuchen, New Jersey.  Popino trains in many dance forms, but especially enjoys modern and contemporary work. During her time at Mason Gross she has worked with pristine choreographers such as Randy James, Chien-Ying Wang, Kimberly Bartosik, Ani Javian, Carlye Eckert and Paul C. Ocampo.

Her work focuses on playfulness and finding spatial relations within the movement. It is important that playfulness is sourced from memories within her own body or eye witnessed through another. That playfulness is brought to life through Chance Operations; a tool Popino utilizes frequently to bring more spontaneity to the movement. Typically, she chooses a small group of dancers to create work with to encompass intimacy through movement. Her work has been produced for Rutgers University’s student work performances as seen above.

Popino’s teaching style focuses on empowering her students to reach their potential. Movement can be a source of empowerment that everyone deserves to experience. It is important that every individual is seen and is given an opportunity to express themselves.
